What is the STAR Technique?

The STAR technique is a structured method for responding to behavioural interview questions. It breaks down your answers into four components:

Begin by outlining the Situation, providing context for the interviewer. Describe the Task or challenge you faced, clarifying your role and responsibilities. Next, detail the Actions you took to address the situation, emphasising your decisions and contributions. Finally, discuss the Results of your actions, highlighting achievements or outcomes, and reflecting on lessons learned from the experience.

By using STAR, you can provide clear and structured responses that highlight your skills, accomplishments, and ability to handle various workplace situations effectively.

Treat your virtual interview just like you would a physical one. Do your preparation beforehand, so you feel comfortable, confident and relaxed. Here are some practical housekeeping tips to help prepare you:

Make sure you have a device with a camera - whether it's a desktop, laptop, mobile phone or tablet. Make sure to check your internet connectivity and device battery power.
